Cruising 101

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

Cruising is one of the most popular and enjoyable ways to experience the world. Whether you’re looking to go on a short, week-long cruise or a longer, multi-week voyage, there are plenty of ways to make sure you have a great experience.

Here are a few tips for cruising.

1. Book Early – Booking your cruise early can help you take advantage of the best deals and promotions. It also gives you plenty of time to plan your trip and make the necessary arrangements. If you have cruised in the past be sure to give your travel agent your VIFP number to ensure you are getting the best rates tailored for you.

2. Research the Ports – Before you set sail, it’s important to research the ports you’ll be visiting. Learn about the culture, customs, and attractions of each destination so you can make the most of your time ashore.

3. Bring the Right Essentials – Cruise ships often have limited onboard shops, so it’s important to bring the essentials with you. Pack comfortable clothing, sunscreen, any medications you need, and other items you may need during your voyage.

4. Take Advantage of Onboard Activities – Most cruise ships offer a variety of onboard activities and entertainment. Research what’s available on your ship and make the most of it.

5. Take Advantage of Shore Excursions – Most cruise lines offer shore excursions at each of their ports. These can be a great way to explore the local culture and attractions. Research what’s available and book in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. Booking an excursion from the cruise also ensures you will not miss the boat in the event you are running late to get back to the ship. In the event you wish to do your own thing it will be up to you to make sure you return to the ship on time for debarkation from the port.

6. Stay Connected – Most cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected with friends and family back home. However, the cost can be expensive, so it’s best to research options before you set sail.

7. Set a Budget – Cruises can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget before you embark. Consider what you’re willing to spend on food, drinks, and onboard activities, and stick to it. While most food options, water, lemonade, and tea will be included you want to be prepared to spend if you want specialty dining, alcoholic drinks, or specialty beverages. You are also responsible for your own food at the ports unless you purchase an excursion that includes it.

8. Pack Light – Space is limited onboard cruise ships, so you’ll want to pack as light as possible. Avoid bringing items you won’t need and focus on what’s essential for your trip.

9. Keep Track of Your Belongings – Cruise ships can be crowded and it’s easy to misplace your belongings. Keep track of your items and don’t leave them unattended.

10. Stay Hydrated – Being on a cruise ship can be dehydrating. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout your journey to stay healthy and hydrated after all...it is free!

11. Get Travel Insurance – Cruise ships often travel to remote areas, so it’s important to have the right travel insurance to protect you in case of an emergency.

12. Take Pictures – Don’t forget to take plenty of photos of your voyage so you can remember it for years to come.

Cruising can be a great way to see the world and experience new cultures. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to having an enjoyable and memorable voyage.
